Miscreants vandalised idols at the Shwarupdah Palpara Sri Sri Rakhha Kali Temple in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia last night and stole a security camera and memory card.
Temple caretakers and law enforcers said the vandals damaged two idols in the temple.
Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mominul Islam said it had been raining heavily in the area since last evening. The incident might have taken place between 8:00pm and 8:30pm last night.
Badal Kumar Dey, former secretary of the temple committee, said, "For the past three years, we have been organising Durga Puja here. This incident ahead of Durga Puja has left us in a state of fear."
He added that miscreants took away the IP camera and its memory card that had been installed for security.
OC Mominul said no one has been arrested in this connection yet and no complaints have been filed.
"However, we are conducting a thorough investigation," he added.
Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Abu Hasnat Mohmmad Arafin visited the spot this morning. "Legal action will be taken following a proper investigation," he told The Daily Star.
Asked about the current security measures at the temple, the DC said new cameras have been installed. Besides, Ansar members remain deployed round the clock.
"The situation is now normal," he added.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the temple committee, Sreebash Kumar Dey, said they have held a meeting with the Kushtia superintendent of police over the incident.
He said they have not decided yet whether to file a case over the matter. "We will discuss the matter with community members before making a decision."
