The Dhaka North unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal is awaiting a new leadership team following the dissolution of its previous committee. Several leaders have emerged as potential candidates for the top posts, with discussions gaining momentum within the organisation.
The Dhaka North Jubo Dal committee was dissolved on September 30, citing the expiry of its tenure. Since then, several names have been discussed for the president's post, including SM Mizanur Rahman Raj, Monirul Islam Swapan and Sazzadul Miraj.
The potential candidates expect the party's central leadership to give priority to those who remained active in street protests against the previous government despite various challenges.
Monirul Islam Swapan, a contender for the president's post, said those who remained active on the streets and maintained their faith in the leadership of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and the late Khaleda Zia should receive recognition.
He said activists who took part in party programmes, often enduring hardships, and worked to establish a democratic system would be duly evaluated.
There is also considerable discussion over the general secretary's post. Among the names being mentioned are Aminul Islam, Rajib Hossain Pintu, Aminul Haque Himel and Rafi Uddin Faisal.
Aminul Islam, a contender for the general secretary's post, said they had remained on the streets throughout the 17 years of political struggle, without stepping away even for 17 seconds. He said their goal had been to bring down the previous government and help people experience democracy, despite risking their lives.
Another contender, Rajib Hossain Pintu, said he had been at the forefront of the party's movements during difficult times. He believes a disciplined and well-organised unit can be built by recognising dedicated activists, bringing new members forward and understanding people's expectations.
Asked when the new committee might be announced, Jubo Dal General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayon said he could not specify a timeline. However, he said the central leadership would try to form the committee quickly, as Dhaka North is an important organisational unit and currently has no committee.
BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the leadership selection process would consider the roles played by leaders during the 17 years of political movements, including those who faced repression and persecution. Their leadership abilities and qualifications would also be assessed, he added.
The selection of the new Dhaka North Jubo Dal leadership is expected to take into account street-level activism, organisational skills, sacrifices and unity among party activists.
