Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP) is preparing to restructure its central committee, with four senior organisational positions set to be abolished and responsibilities redistributed ahead of its first national council scheduled for February 28, 2027.

The party’s convener, Nahid Islam, and member secretary, Akhter Hossen, are expected to retain their positions, while the restructuring will introduce new senior roles and reduce the central committee to 151 members.

Four positions to be abolished

The NCP’s highest policymaking body, the Political Council, has decided to abolish the posts of spokesperson, chief coordinator and chief organisers for the northern and southern regions.

The positions are currently held by Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain as spokesperson, Nasiruddin Patwary as chief coordinator, Sarjis Alam as chief organiser for the northern region and Hasnat Abdullah as chief organiser for the southern region.

Under the proposed restructuring, Nasiruddin Patwary and Hasnat Abdullah are expected to become senior joint conveners. Sarjis Alam and Asif Mahmud may take up the roles of senior joint member secretaries.

Central committee to have 151 members

The party has reportedly finalised the restructuring and redistribution of responsibilities. The new committee was expected to be announced by October 13, following discussions at a Political Council meeting held on Sunday.

Several senior leaders and lawmakers attended the meeting, including Hasnat Abdullah, Abdullah Al Amin, Nusrat Tabassum, Sarjis Alam, Nasiruddin Patwary, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, Ariful Islam Adeeb, Sarwar Tushar, Ali Ahsan Junayed and Salehuddin Sifat.

First national council planned for 2027

The NCP was launched on February 28, 2025, under the leadership of Nahid Islam, a former adviser to the interim government, with Akhter Hossen named member secretary. Its initial convening committee included more than 200 leaders and activists.

The planned first national council will mark a significant organisational milestone for the party, as it seeks to streamline its leadership structure and clarify responsibilities among senior leaders.
